My last stop on this Siberian Month was Krasnoyarsk, the third largest city in Siberia and a highlight on my last trip 4 years ago. I had been curious to spend more time here and for the occasion, I rented a 10-day apartment in the center to be close to the action. Looking back at it, it was definitely a good move.

The beauty of Krasnoyarsk is in its nature, with its parks all over the city and especially the Stolby national park just a few kilometers away. What I especially like about this city compared to other Russian cities is its compact center, situated between 2 rivers, appearing like an island. It helps to concentrate the points of interest in the center and not spreading over a large distance, making it a great pedestrian city. The riverfronts are covered in green parks and seemed to constantly fill up with couples enjoying its romantic atmosphere and kids feeding the ducks. And just as the city is preparing for the XXIX Winter Universiade 2019, they have done extensive works make to make its parks even more enjoyable.

This year I was in Krasnoyarsk during the FIFA World Cup 2018, but even though Russia was the host country, people here didn’t feel too much interested in the world cup. Since the games started at 1am (because of the time difference), most bars and pubs where people would usually gather to watch the games were… closed! Maybe people in Krasnoyarsk prefer watching the games at home, or maybe they are simply more interested in hockey. That would make sense…
Best 2 Days Itinerary for Krasnoyarsk
After a nice breakfast in one of the cafes on Karl Marx street, start your walking tour at the epicenter of town, the Teatralnaya Square with its beautiful State Opera house. Go down the stairs towards the river to reach the River Enisey Park Walk and walk along the promenade all the way to the Vynogradovskiy Bridge where you cross to the other side on the island, a great place to have a picnic or feed the ducks on a hot summer weekend. On the evening, come back towards the center and walk along the city’s main artery, Prospect Mira (or even Karl Marx street) to reach the Intercession Cathedral. Continue to the Revolution Square to see the imposing Lenine Statue and finish your walk in the Central Park. At night, try some Siberian specialties and sample some Siberian beer (or vodka) at riverside bars which are packed in the summer.
Reserve day two for the pride of Krasnoyarsk, the Stolby National Park. You can reach the park easily by bus and make your own hiking walk through the area, and take the cable car on top of the mountain for a nice view of the surrounding Siberian forest. Try to spot a bear if your lucky (or unlucky) as there were when I visited the area.
